🇨🇩🇫🇷 DRC Remains on UN Security Council Agenda as France Takes September Presidency
NEW YORK/KINSHASA — September 2, 2026 — The Democratic Republic of the Congo remains on the agenda of the United Nations Security Council as France assumes the Council’s rotating presidency for September.
The French presidency said the Council would continue following crises already under consideration, including the conflict in eastern DRC and diplomatic efforts aimed at restoring peace in the Great Lakes region.
France presented its September priorities after taking over the monthly presidency on September 1.
The programme comes amid continued concern over insecurity in eastern Congo and the implementation of existing Security Council decisions.
Why the DRC Remains Important to the Security Council
The Security Council has repeatedly addressed the conflict in eastern DRC, including armed-group activity, the presence of foreign forces and the protection of civilians.
France has also played an important role on the DRC file as a Security Council penholder, helping prepare draft texts and coordinate negotiations among Council members.
For the DRC, continued attention means the conflict remains part of the Council’s diplomatic work while regional and internationally supported peace initiatives continue.
The issue is particularly important for efforts aimed at protecting Congolese territorial integrity, reducing violence and ensuring that parties respect commitments already made.
Previous Security Council Decisions Remain Important
In 2025, the Security Council unanimously adopted Resolution 2773, addressing the conflict in eastern DRC, calling for an end to hostilities and demanding action regarding unauthorized foreign military involvement and support for armed groups.
The Council also adopted Resolution 2808, extending the mandate of the United Nations peacekeeping mission in the DRC, MONUSCO.
However, Security Council resolutions do not automatically change conditions on the ground.
Their effectiveness depends on implementation by the parties, sustained diplomatic engagement and the Council’s willingness to respond when commitments are not respected.
No New Enforcement Measure Announced
France’s September programme confirms that the DRC will continue receiving Security Council attention, but it does not amount to the announcement of a new enforcement measure.
No new sanctions package, military measure or binding resolution was announced simply as part of France’s assumption of the presidency.
Any additional Security Council action would require negotiations among members and, where necessary, a formal vote.
Focus Remains on Peace and Compliance
The immediate significance of France’s presidency is that the conflict in eastern DRC and the diplomatic processes affecting the country remain visible at the highest level of the United Nations.
For Congolese citizens, the larger question is whether continued international attention will translate into stronger implementation of existing resolutions, greater pressure on parties to respect their commitments and improved security for communities affected by the conflict.
