🇯🇵🇨🇩 Japan Announces $5 Million Emergency Grant to Support Ebola Response in DRC
KINSHASA/TOKYO — September 1, 2026 — The Government of Japan has announced a new US$5 million emergency grant to strengthen epidemic prevention and humanitarian assistance during the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The funding will support efforts to respond to the Ebola Bundibugyo virus outbreak through three international organizations operating in the DRC.
According to Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the assistance will be distributed among the International Organization for Migration (IOM), UNICEF and the World Food Programme (WFP).

How the $5 Million Will Be Distributed
Japan has allocated US$2 million to IOM to support epidemic-prevention activities.
UNICEF will receive US$1.5 million to strengthen health services as well as water, sanitation and hygiene initiatives.
Another US$1.5 million will go to WFP to provide food assistance to communities affected by the outbreak and related humanitarian pressures.
The full $5 million package will therefore be implemented through the three international organizations rather than being transferred directly to the Congolese government.
Supporting Communities Affected by Ebola
Japan said the emergency assistance is intended both to strengthen measures against the outbreak and to support communities facing wider health and humanitarian needs.
The funding could help expand disease-prevention activities, improve access to clean water and sanitation services, strengthen health interventions and provide food assistance in affected areas.
These measures are particularly important as humanitarian and health organizations work to contain transmission while supporting families and communities affected by the outbreak.
International Support for DRC Continues to Grow
Japan’s announcement adds another source of international financing to the DRC’s Ebola response.
The funding also gives each participating agency a clearly defined area of responsibility: IOM for epidemic prevention, UNICEF for health and WASH services, and WFP for food assistance.
The new Japanese contribution comes as international partners continue mobilizing financial, technical and humanitarian resources to help the DRC contain the outbreak.
