🇨🇩 Fayulu Accused of Echoing Kigali’s Banyamulenge Narrative

Congolese opposition leader Martin Fayulu is facing criticism from some Banyamulenge voices following controversial remarks questioning the community’s status as a Congolese ethnic group and describing its origins as Rwandan.

Among those responding strongly is Beatrice Gisaro, who accused Fayulu of repeating an identity narrative similar to one recently advanced in Kigali by senior Rwandan political figure Tito Rutaremara.

“The convergence is chilling,” Gisaro wrote, arguing that Fayulu’s rhetoric risks strengthening the same narrative that Rwanda has used to portray itself as a protector of Congolese Tutsi communities.

“You Don’t Fight Rwandan Interference by Adopting Its Identity Vocabulary”

Gisaro contrasted Rutaremara’s reported characterization of the Banyamulenge as “Banyarwanda from Congo” with Fayulu’s argument that Banyamulenge are not an indigenous Congolese ethnic group but people of Rwandan origin who may hold Congolese nationality.

She strongly rejected both characterizations.

“You don’t fight Rwandan interference by adopting its identity vocabulary!” Gisaro said.

Her message was equally firm toward Kigali:

“We are not your ‘Banyarwanda from Congo’ and we will not take up arms against our homeland.”

Addressing Fayulu, she added:

“We are not Rwandans who have simply acquired Congolese nationality. Our Congolese identity does not await your validation.”

Banyamulenge Voices Reject Outside Definitions of Their Identity

The controversy comes amid a wider debate over Banyamulenge identity following remarks attributed to Rutaremara that have drawn criticism from members of the community.

Some Banyamulenge activists have rejected attempts to portray them as Rwandans living in Congo, while also rejecting calls encouraging members of the community to take up arms against the DRC.

The latest criticism directed at Fayulu shows that the identity debate is not limited to tensions between Kinshasa and Kigali.

For the Banyamulenge voices challenging both narratives, their message is that neither Rwandan officials nor Congolese political leaders should redefine their identity for political purposes.

🇨🇩 “We are Banyamulenge. We are Congolese.”
