🇨🇩 Azarias Ruberwa Rebukes Martin Fayulu Over Banyamulenge Remarks

Former Vice President of the Democratic Republic of Congo Azarias Ruberwa has strongly criticized recent remarks by opposition leader Martin Fayulu concerning the Banyamulenge community.

Ruberwa described Fayulu’s statements as “unacceptable” and “deeply regrettable,” and called on the opposition leader to withdraw them.

According to Ruberwa, retracting the remarks would prevent such a position from being left as part of Fayulu’s political legacy in the history of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Ruberwa Challenges Fayulu’s Position

The former vice president also argued that Fayulu’s statements demonstrate a misunderstanding of certain aspects of Congolese nationality law and the history of the DRC.

For Ruberwa, the Banyamulenge should not be portrayed as people who are foreign to Congo’s national history and realities.

His response comes amid an increasingly heated public debate over the identity and nationality of the Banyamulenge community.

Banyamulenge Identity Debate Intensifies

The controversy has once again placed questions of nationality, identity and belonging at the center of political discussion in the DRC.

Some Banyamulenge voices have strongly rejected narratives portraying them as foreigners or simply as Rwandans who acquired Congolese nationality, insisting that they are Congolese and that their identity should not be redefined by political actors.

Ruberwa’s intervention adds another prominent political voice to the debate and increases pressure on Fayulu to clarify or reconsider his position.

🇨🇩 The controversy continues to generate debate over what it means to belong to the Congolese national community and how questions of ethnicity and nationality should be addressed in the country’s political discourse.
