Rwandan-Linked TB2 Drone Reportedly Shot Down by FARDC in Fizi Highlands
The Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) say they shot down a Bayraktar TB2 drone over Mulima in the Fizi Highlands, South Kivu, on August 20, attributing the aircraft to Rwanda or Rwanda-linked forces.
According to Congolese military and local accounts, the drone was reportedly conducting reconnaissance or combat operations when FARDC air defenses brought it down.
Images said to show wreckage from the aircraft have since circulated online.
FARDC Reports Successful Drone Interception
The reported interception comes amid continued fighting across the Fizi and Minembwe highlands, where Congolese forces and their allies have been engaged in confrontations with armed groups.
FARDC is presenting the incident as a successful defense of Congolese territory as drones play an increasingly prominent role in the conflict in eastern DRC.
Incident Follows Mwalu Hotel Bombing Accusation
The reported shootdown comes just one day after FARDC accused Rwanda of using two TB2 drones to strike the Mwalu Hotel in Fizi-Centre.
Congolese military officials said that attack seriously injured two people and caused significant material damage.
The allegations have added to tensions between Kinshasa and Kigali over the conflict in eastern DRC.
Drone Warfare in Eastern DRC
The Congolese government has repeatedly accused Rwanda of providing military support to AFC/M23 and allied forces operating in eastern Congo.
Rwanda has repeatedly rejected accusations that it is responsible for the conflict and has disputed several claims made by Kinshasa regarding its military activities in the DRC.
The reported interception of the TB2 highlights the growing importance of unmanned aircraft in the conflict, where drones are increasingly being used for surveillance, intelligence gathering and combat operations.
As fighting continues in South Kivu, the use of increasingly sophisticated military technology is adding a new dimension to an already complex conflict.
🇨🇩 FARDC says the reported interception demonstrates its determination to defend Congolese territory and counter aerial threats in the country’s east.
