MONUSCO Condemns New ADF Atrocities in Beni and Lubero

The United Nations Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) has strongly condemned a new wave of violence in the country’s east. Between 6 and 16 August 2025, armed rebels from the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) carried out a series of attacks in Beni and Lubero, North Kivu, leaving more than 52 civilians dead, including women and children.

“These attacks deliberately target innocent civilians and constitute a clear violation of international humanitarian law. They amount to crimes against humanity,” declared Bintou Keita, the UN Special Representative in the DRC, in a statement released on Monday, 18 August 2025.

🔹 Communities in Mourning

The massacres have left entire families devastated and villages traumatized. Survivors recount harrowing scenes of violence, with children losing parents and families being forced to abandon their homes. For many, each day is a struggle between staying in danger or fleeing into uncertainty.

🔹 Security Measures Strengthened

In response, MONUSCO announced reinforced patrols with the Congolese Armed Forces (FARDC) in highly vulnerable zones such as Mavivi and Eringeti. The UN Intervention Brigade has also deployed additional troops in Komanda and Otomabere to prevent further incursions.

🔹 Humanitarian Crisis Deepens

Beyond the killings, the attacks have triggered a fresh humanitarian emergency. Thousands have fled their homes, adding to the already high number of displaced people in the region. Schools have closed, fields have been abandoned, and access to healthcare has become dangerously limited.

MONUSCO urged the international community to mobilize greater humanitarian assistance, emphasizing that “behind every attack are thousands of displaced families, survivors scarred for life, and children robbed of their future.”

🔹 A Call for Solidarity and Justice

The UN mission insists that protecting civilians is a collective responsibility and called on all armed groups to lay down their weapons. Kinshasa, along with regional and international partners, is now under growing pressure to take stronger action to end the cycle of violence in eastern Congo.

While the DRC mourns yet another tragedy, MONUSCO’s message is clear: peace and justice must prevail over terror and impunity.
