⚠️ NORTHERN INDIA: Flash Flooding Triggers Mudslide, Leaves Dozens Missing in Uttarakhand
Uttarakhand, India | August 6, 2025
At least four people have died, and dozens remain missing following severe flash flooding that struck the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand on Tuesday, triggering a massive mudslide that swept through a Himalayan village.
According to local officials, more than 70 people have been evacuated as rescue teams work around the clock to locate the missing and provide emergency aid to those affected. A dramatic video circulating on social media shows a thick wall of mud and debris engulfing homes and infrastructure, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.
“We are dealing with a rapidly developing situation,” said a state disaster response officer. “Search and rescue efforts are ongoing, but the terrain and weather are making it extremely difficult.”
The flash floods were triggered by heavy monsoon rains, which have battered the region over the past few days. Experts say the combination of deforestation, climate change, and unregulated development in fragile mountain zones has contributed to the frequency and intensity of such disasters in recent years.
In addition to the fatalities and disappearances, roads have been blocked, bridges washed away, and communication lines disrupted, complicating the humanitarian response.
The government of Uttarakhand has deployed national disaster relief forces (NDRF) and helicopters to assist in rescue operations, while evacuation shelters have been set up for the displaced.
The situation remains critical as forecasters warn of more rain in the coming days, raising concerns about further flooding and landslides.
