DR Congo: Escalating Violence in Masisi Sparks Massive Displacement Crisis

MASISI, NORD-KIVU – The deteriorating security situation in Masisi Territory has triggered a massive displacement of civilians fleeing ongoing clashes between AFC/M23 rebels and wazalendo self-defense forces in the Osso Banyungu and Katoy sectors. The displaced are seeking refuge in the Waloa Yungu groupement, located in neighboring Walikale Territory.

According to Mwami Mutsiirwa Bakungu Ipaka Mérovin, traditional chief of Waloa Yungu, displaced families are arriving in large numbers, overwhelming the host community, which is itself affected by the insecurity. Many have found temporary shelter with host families, while others are occupying classrooms and churches.

The chief stressed that most of the displaced left everything behind during their flight from the conflict zones, arriving with nothing but the clothes on their backs. Among the most vulnerable are children and pregnant women, many of whom are already suffering from illness.

Healthcare access is becoming increasingly dire, as the few medical facilities in the area are running out of essential medicines. “These displaced people urgently need food, non-food items, and especially medicines for the sick,” Mwami Mutsiirwa pleaded, calling on the government and humanitarian partners to act swiftly.

The exact number of displaced households remains unknown, as no full registration has yet been conducted. Meanwhile, the influx continues, with more people arriving daily to escape the escalating violence in Masisi.
