US authorizes security cooperation with DRC

US security cooperation DRC has received new approval after the United States authorized a waiver allowing certain military training and assistance programs with the Democratic Republic of Congo to continue.

US law normally restricts such support to governments whose forces recruit or use child soldiers. Because of the long-running conflict in eastern Congo involving armed groups, the DRC had previously been subject to these limitations.

However, new US assessments say the government of President Félix Tshisekedi is taking meaningful and sustained steps to eliminate the use of child soldiers and strengthen accountability within its security institutions.

The waiver, approved by the Trump administration, recognizes measurable progress and allows continued US-DRC security cooperation at a time when stability in Central Africa has become an increasing strategic priority for Washington.

The United States also reaffirmed its support for the Congolese people’s pursuit of sovereignty, security, and lasting peace.
