Congolese users challenge Makolo over Goma strike remarks

Goma strike remarks made by Rwandan government spokesperson Yolande Makolo sparked a strong online backlash after she commented on the March 11 incident in Goma that killed French UNICEF worker Karine Buisset and two other people.

In a heated exchange on X, Makolo accused the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo, known as FARDC, of carrying out a drone strike in Goma. Referring to ACLED data, she argued that FARDC has dominated drone operations in eastern DRC since 2025.

Her comments quickly drew criticism from several Congolese voices online. Among them, a Congolese patriot and political analyst strongly rejected what was seen as speculation about events taking place inside the DRC.

The analyst argued that no foreign official has the authority to make conclusions about incidents on Congolese soil before the results of an independent investigation are released. She also said that the death of a humanitarian worker should not be turned into a political argument.

Many other Congolese users echoed the same message, insisting that the DRC is a sovereign state and rejecting what they described as external interference in the country’s internal affairs.

The exchange reflects wider tensions linked to the conflict in eastern Congo, where the war has continued to fuel political disputes, military accusations, and regional mistrust. It also shows how social media has become another battlefield in the debate over security, responsibility, and sovereignty in the region.

For many Congolese commentators, statements from foreign officials on such sensitive incidents only deepen anger and raise more questions about the role of neighboring countries in the crisis affecting eastern DRC.
