DRC: Constant Mutamba Undergoes Surgery in Detention — His Party Denounces “Medical Negligence”
Former Congolese Minister of Justice Constant Mutamba 🔗, detained since September 2, 2025, has undergone surgery while in prison. His political movement, Nouvelle Génération pour l’Émergence du Congo (NOGEC) 🔗, announced the news on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, expressing outrage over what it described as “avoidable medical negligence.”
According to NOGEC 🔗, the operation was successful, but the party stated that the situation could have been prevented if Mutamba 🔗 had received timely private medical treatment. The organization called for accountability, stressing that negligence in detention violates fundamental human rights.
Constant Mutamba 🔗 was sentenced to three years of hard labor for allegedly embezzling $19 million USD meant for the construction of a prison in Kisangani 🔗, in Tshopo Province.
He has now spent more than a month behind bars, a period that has raised serious concerns about the quality of healthcare provided to political detainees in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) 🔗.
In a statement shared with MecaMediaAfrica.com 🔗, NOGEC 🔗 demanded guarantees for its leader’s access to adequate medical care and urged the Congolese government 🔗 to uphold constitutional and humanitarian standards in all detention facilities.
“Allowing such medical negligence is an attack on his basic rights as a citizen and as a human being,” the statement reads.
The party continues to call on national and international human rights organizations 🔗 to closely monitor the situation and ensure that justice is respected within the Congolese penal system.
