DR Congo Moves Closer to Launching Its First National Satellite in Partnership with Monacosat

KINSHASA, DR CONGO –
On Saturday evening, President Félix Tshisekedi held an official meeting with a representative from Monacosat, the satellite operator based in the Principality of Monaco. The meeting, held at the Cité de l’Union Africaine, was also attended by two key ministers:
• Augustin Kibasa, Minister of Digital Economy
• José Mpanda Kabangu, Minister of Posts, Telecommunications, and New Technologies (PTNTIC).

During the audience, Monacosat’s representative presented the progress made in the ongoing satellite acquisition project by the Democratic Republic of Congo. The project, a milestone in national technological advancement, is set to close the digital divide across the country by expanding access to high-speed internet, particularly in rural and remote areas.

🌐 Digital Leap for a Connected Congo

The initiative is part of President Tshisekedi’s broader vision to modernize the country’s digital infrastructure. According to Monacosat, the satellite will serve multiple strategic purposes, including:
• High-speed broadband connectivity across all provinces
• Improved cybersecurity measures
• Development of e-learning (remote education)
• Expansion of telemedicine services
• Stimulating digital economic growth and innovation

💰 $400 Million Already Secured

The most promising update shared during the meeting was the confirmation that a financial institution has already secured the full $400 million required to fund the project. This financial backing is expected to fast-track the implementation phase.

Monacosat already operates satellite services in various North African countries, including Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Sudan, and Ethiopia. The expansion into Central Africa marks a new chapter for both Monacosat and the DR Congo’s digital sovereignty.

📡 A Bold Vision for National Sovereignty

President Tshisekedi’s engagement in this high-level partnership signals a strong commitment to leveraging digital technology for national development, security, and integration. For a country as vast as the DR Congo, having its own national satellite is not only a technological milestone but a symbol of independence, capable of transforming public services and bridging social gaps.
