In a surprising political shift, Paluku Kisaka Yereyere, a well-known political figure in North Kivu, has officially joined the Alliance Fleuve Congo (AFC) and the M23 rebel movement. Appearing in full military fatigues, Yereyere’s move marks a dramatic turn in the career of a man once firmly rooted in the national political establishment.

Yereyere previously served as Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Livestock during the presidency of Joseph Kabila and was elected as a national deputy representing Lubero territory.

While the exact motivations behind his alignment with the AFC/M23 remain unclear, the decision is already fueling heated debate on the complex web of alliances and fractures that define the political and security landscape in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

In a region long destabilized by armed conflict, the presence of a former high-ranking state official within the ranks of an armed group is seen by many as both shocking and deeply troubling. Analysts warn that such moves could further complicate peace efforts and deepen mistrust between political actors and local communities.
