Beni – ADF Ambush: Several Travelers Missing Near Eringeti

On the evening of Saturday, August 9, 2025, a sudden attack by Ugandan ADF rebels shattered six months of relative calm along the Eringeti–Kainama axis in Beni territory, leaving several travelers missing and reigniting fears in the region.

According to local sources, the incident involved a passenger vehicle carrying both people and goods, ambushed in Lese, a densely forested area roughly 20 kilometers from Eringeti, on the main road linking Butembo to Bunia.

In addition to the disappearance of an as-yet-undetermined number of civilians, the attackers — believed to be ADF insurgents — set the vehicle ablaze before disappearing into the surrounding bush.

As the threat escalates, traffic on this route has been suspended, with vehicles halted and the corridor deemed unsafe. The Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC) and Ugandan forces have been deployed to the scene in an attempt to secure the area and rescue the hostages. However, the local civil society has criticized the prolonged lack of a robust and consistent security presence along this route, arguing that it has allowed rebel attacks to resume.

This tragic incident serves as a grim reminder of the persistent fragility of the region despite past military operations, and underscores the urgent need for sustained security measures to safeguard civilians and their movements.
