The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has officially joined the list of the world’s most dangerous travel destinations after the Travel Advisories Agency placed the country at Level 4 – “Do Not Travel” in its latest update on Tuesday, August 5, 2025.

The agency’s ranking places the DRC alongside 20 other countries such as Afghanistan, Syria, Yemen, Somalia, and Russia, highlighting extreme security risks and limited consular support for travelers.

“These locations present dangerous local conditions and a limited capacity for assistance to travelers,” the agency stated in its report.

This classification comes at a time when Congolese authorities are working to rebrand the country’s image internationally. In recent weeks, the government has signed multiple partnerships with European football clubs in an effort to boost tourism and attract investors.

However, the “red zone” listing serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing security challenges in eastern provinces, where armed conflicts have persisted for decades.

While many see this as a severe blow to the DRC’s global image, others consider it a wake-up call for accelerated reforms, strengthening the rule of law, and improving the safety of citizens — essential conditions for welcoming tourists with confidence.

Full List of Level 4 – “Do Not Travel” Countries: Afghanistan, Belarus, Burkina Faso, Myanmar, Central African Republic, DRC, Haiti, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Libya, Mali, North Korea, Russia, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Ukraine, Venezuela, Yemen.
