🇨🇩 Luena (Haut-Lomami): Town Plunged into Darkness for Over Three Years Due to Power Cable Theft
Residents of Luena town, located in Haut-Lomami province in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), have lived without electricity for more than three years, a situation confirmed by the provincial governor’s representative.
According to local authorities, the prolonged blackout was caused by the theft of high-voltage power cables owned by the National Electricity Company (SNEL), carried out by unidentified individuals who allegedly sold the materials for personal gain.
Officials report that the theft has had severe consequences on residents’ lives — crippling economic activities, businesses, healthcare services, and educational institutions across the town.
However, several suspects have already been arrested and taken to court, as the provincial government is being urged to take immediate action to restore electricity and protect public infrastructure.
“The people of Luena are suffering. It’s time for urgent action to restore light and bring back hope,” said a local official.
